Frustrations with Microsoft LiveID sign-on

Today I decided to sign up for Microsoft security bulletin notifications as I am working alot in windows enviroments now and it is important for us to get security patches out there as soon as possible.

The list of security notifications can be accessed through 3 options (which can be found here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/dd252948) :

  • Email
  • RSS
  • Web

For my purpose I thought email would be good, so I decided to try subscribe for email notifications. This however required me to create an LiveID account. Fine, fine.. I can register, but I would’ve thought they could just accept my work email address and send me the notifications there.

Windows LiveID sign-on

I clicked the “Sign up” button and started filling out my information, but I was quickly stopped by an error when filling in my password.

16 characters max

What is this Microsoft??? Why can I not choose a password with more than 16 characters? Now I have to go out of my way to make my login less secure!

In a world where passwords are more and more deprecated and instead we try to get users to use “pass phrases” this is a real set back! I really hope they will fix this.
